Artist Statement:
In my thematic I wanted to capture my photographs in a way that showed off their design and shape. My photographs are from several different locations but they still have that element of rustic design and are up close, so the details stand out, that keep them consistent with one another.
What first inspired this was that first assignment to take 200 photos. I took several of my fireplace that I really loved and wanted to continue in that way. So originally my thematic was just going to be fireplaces but I found that the photographs became repetitive and honestly boring. So after going over them for a while and shooting more I discovered that what I was really drawn to was the rustic, vintage aspect of the fireplace. Also, not necessarily things that are thought of as beautiful, but are necessary for the overall object to function. This inspired me to go to the Vietnam Memorial sight in Berlin. There I took some great shoots of the old canon they have on display. I love these shots of all the exposed bits and pieces of the canon!
The overall intent of my photographs was to show the details of rustic design and shape that we don’t notice very often. If you truly take a minute to think about all the hard work that went into every little thing we use, it will amaze you. Especially with the growing technology we have in today’s society, it amazes me how much we take for granted. I just wanted to show all those details and the rustic designs that we overlook every day.
Reflection:
I am very happy with the way my photographs came out. I do understand what everyone was saying about my thematic, it is more design and shape rather than architecture. I did go back and revise my artist statement to fit more with my photographs and i am very pleased with everything now. I enjoyed this project a lot because it was the first one where we actually needed to take more than one photo. And it requires a lot more thought and planning. This project was definitely a growing and learning experience for me. From just this one projected I feel like I have found my style, I love the rustic, up-close details in my thematic. And I was inspired by others from the class that shot those details as well. Although, I was amazed my Katherine's pictures and would really like to try something more like either in another project, or just on my own.
If I could go back and do anything different, I would just change the one picture of the railing. I am really happy with all the other pictures and think they go really well together, but that one picture does throw me of a little. I did shot about four or five times but I think if I had gone out just once more it would have taken the project from good to great.
